In this role you will join our growing Intellectual Property team, as part of Legal. Legal is a small, dynamic team of in-house lawyers who focus on business-oriented and quick legal guidance in starting up a new car brand.

This position will be located at our HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden.

What you will do

In this position you will provide support to the intellectual property work, specifically patent processes. Much of your time will include building and facilitating collaborations between the patent team and the R&D teams, both in Sweden and the UK.

Your work may also include interfacing with various other organizations within Polestar on IP-related matters. You will handle your work independently and with full responsibility.

Polestar has a global footprint and you will be interacting and collaborating with a diverse and international team of colleagues in all areas of the business.

Rajvardhan Desai

SUMMER 2021

Company: Truecaller AB
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Time period: 8 weeks, June -July

Hello! My name is Rajvardhan Desai. I will share my experience of working with Truecaller- a unicorn software technology startup based in Stockholm, Sweden. It has product offerings primarily in the form of smartphone apps and, in essence, is a modern phone directory that helps weed out scam callers in real-time. A company that is growing and heading towards an IPO in the near future. I, along with a colleague from my class – Erik Malmberg, was assigned a project to map out the existing intellectual assets and design a framework for capturing Intellectual property in the early stages of development.

We started out the project by getting an overall understanding of the product followed by learning the “tech lingo” used in a software company because we had to get information by speaking to the employees. Taking a top-down approach from the CTO to the engineers, in total, we had meetings with 40+ employees to understand the development process and ultimately getting a deeper understanding of complex tech that works behind the scenes. In parallel, we were getting to know the operational practicalities and legalities that are involved by having meetings with the leadership and legal teams. 

The project at the first glance looked overwhelming, mostly because we were not very familiar with software technology. But, we were still at ease since we had training on the general process to work with such a project during the KBBDM course at Chalmers which was led by Prof. Bowman Heiden. The education was in the form of a simulation and this helped us to believe in what we were doing at the internship. The end result was achieving good results and the leadership of the company appreciating the work we had done. 

The internship has been a superb learning experience professionally. That being said, having fun wasn’t left out! The internship brought me to the beautiful city of Stockholm for the first time since I came to Sweden from India a year ago. I can now safely say that I know the city well enough to make a non-touristy itinerary!  The company and its people made us interns feel so welcomed by inviting us to the annual summer party. The 8 weeks introduced me to awesome people, people that I wouldn’t normally get a chance to speak to.

Michelle Fransson and Marta Sadriu

SPRING 2021

Company: ASSA ABLOY & Spotify
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Time period: 20 weeks January through June

Hi!

During spring 2021, we (Michelle Fransson and Marta Sadriu) took part in the CIP Internship Program which allowed us to combine our master’s thesis work with a dual internship opportunity at Spotify and ASSA ABLOY. You might be wondering what Spotify, a global audio streaming service, and ASSA ABLOY, a global leader in access solutions, could possibly have in common. Well, the answer is data.

As more products and services are becoming digital and connected, more data can be collected and stored. This enables companies to access and leverage value embedded in data, which in turn leads to data becoming a new type of property – an invaluable asset that can be produced, processed, transferred and stolen. Therefore, our project goal was to investigate “Data as an Intellectual Asset”. This meant defining how data drives value for Spotify and ASSA ABLOY, and how companies can work to manage, protect and control their data in an efficient way. By using the tools and frameworks related to Intellectual Asset Management, taught in the ICM track, we were able to investigate and capture data assets at the two companies by combining a legal, business and technology perspective. An important part of the result was the identified difficulties in communicating about data across organizations.  Therefore, the project resulted in a “Data Asset Framework” that can help organizations understand their data as intellectual assets, and create guidelines for how data can be utilized, protected and controlled.

One of the major highlights of this project has been the opportunity to deep dive into two of the most interesting Swedish companies that operate and compete on the global market – a truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! We were given free reins to investigate the companies in order to understand how they operate and create value. This mainly meant conducting a wide number of interviews with employees across both companies. The research was complemented by an investigation of relevant literature in order to strengthen the quality of the results and provide a strong anchoring to existing knowledge about data.

Conclusively, we would like to express our gratitude towards our amazing supervisors at ASSA ABLOY, Katarina Wendin, and at Spotify, Ellenor Hayes & Per Wendin, who have supported us in the best ways possible through this crazy and incredible journey. We highly recommend applying to the CIP Internship Program, and especially to a dual internship opportunity, as this has been an invaluable experience for us!

Yuejun Sun and David Lager

SPRING 2021

Company: Koninklijke Philips N.V.
Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands. The internship was carried out at the IP&S department on distance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Time period: From January to the end of June 2021

We are Yuejun Sun and David Lager. We have both graduated from the ICM track at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship in June 2021. We wrote our master’s thesis in parallel with conducting a CIP internship at Philips, where we gained valuable experiences. Here we want to tell you about it.

The internship topic we explored was named “The Role of IP in a Data-driven Business Model”. At Philips, we examined how data-driven business models are interplaying with IP assets. The study was done by collecting and analyzing case studies both internally at Philips as well as competitors’ data-driven business cases. We started by learning the different business clusters within Philips’ organization and from that identified interesting business cases. Then we searched and studied competitors’ cases to identify similarities and differences about their data-driven business models and utilization of IPs.

In order to explain the result clearly, we established the TVID-framework (Technology, Value, IP, and Data). This framework was then adopted to the case analyses to present the interlinkage between technology assets, intellectual properties, and value creation activities in a data-driven chain. By utilizing the TVID framework, we summarized which Technology assets and IPs were essential in different parts of the data-driven value chain and the findings helped us to understand the competitive advantages concerning IP strategy.

Even though this internship has been performed on distance due to the Covid-19 situation, we have experienced a strong inclusion from IP&S colleagues and Philips as an organization. We have appreciated the international environment surrounding the department with colleagues located all over the world, even though it required us to think twice regarding time zones before sending out meeting invitations on Teams.

The CIP internship has provided us with the opportunity to learn how Philips innovates and how they transform businesses into the digital era and shaping their competitive edge. By working as interns at a company like Philips, which has a well-known innovation tradition and global presence in different technological areas, we also got confirmed that our ICM education provides us with the right knowledge and advanced tools and models, which enables us to perform from day one.

Overall, it was no doubt a perfect internship and master thesis project for us to complete our study!

Tatiane Abreu Dall’Agnol

SPRING 2021

Company: Pieris Pharmaceuticals
Location: Munich, Germany
Time Period: January to June

Hi! I am Tatiane Dall´Agnol and during the first semester of 2021, I was an intern at Pieris Pharmaceuticals. The company is based in Munich, Germany, focused on drug development for oncology and the respiratory system. My internship was in the Business Development and Competitive Intelligence department. During this period, I learned how to perform drug indication analysis, evaluate competitors’ updates, and helped to raise strategic recommendations based on our work. To be part of a company that has consistent growth by developing life-changing therapies was the best form to start my new career path.

Because of the pandemic period, everyone in the company office was working remotely, and so was I. However, I had excellent communication with the team, felt very welcome, and learned a lot from them. Even with all the restrictions that recent times demand, they organized a 10-day trip to Munich so that I could meet the team in person and visit the office. I was able to better understand the structure and processes of a pharmaceutical company and the experience helped me to get a great job after the master’s degree.

I highly recommend Pieris for an internship and I encourage you all to apply. It’s an amazing place where you can have professional development and an amazing time.

Legal Counsel @Assa Abloy

As our Legal Counsel you will be joining our in-house legal team in Stockholm, Sweden. ASSA ABLOY Global Solutions has activities across the globe and you will be providing legal advice and guidance to employees and managers at all levels within the Global Solutions division.

In addition to providing legal advice and contract support to our Global organization, you will instruct external legal counsel as and when required. You will also be participating strategic divisional projects in furtherance of the Group’s compliance programs, with the support of the divisional Compliance Officer, Export Control Manager and Data Protection Manager, as well as supporting the division’s strategic goals, including both organic and non-organic growth (M&A).

Responsibilities:

  • Drafting, negotiating, and interpreting a wide range of contracts, including sale and purchase of goods and services, technology, software and IP-related agreements and licenses.
  • Supporting Business Areas on legal matters arising in product roll-out in new jurisdictions.
  • Assisting in claims management, litigation and pre-litigation activities, including working with and managing outside counsel (and managing the budget for the matter) to develop strategies to initiate, defend, resolve and prevent various forms of litigation.
  • Supporting M&A transactions.
  • Developing procedures and internal processes designed to bring down Group policies to the division and the respective Business Areas, and
  • Assisting in a wide range of intellectual property issues, including copyright, trademark, and trade secret matters.

Isak Lind and Rasmus Kockgård

SPRING 2021

Company: Ericsson AB
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Time period: 20 weeks, from January through June.

Hello! We (Isak Lind and Rasmus Kockgård) would like to share our experience of combining our master´s thesis work at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship with an internship at Ericsson AB, through CIP. Our thesis work aimed to investigate how green tech, and green IoT manufacturing technology, in particular, could be utilized to a broader extent through mechanisms of sharing intellectual property. The internship at Ericsson gave us the ideal conditions to carry out our thesis work. Ericsson is a well-renowned provider and licensor of connectivity technology that enables environmental savings. Thereby, through their substantial expertise and extensive network with other organizations, we were able to complete our thesis and assist Ericsson in further investigating the possibilities to spread green tech through mechanisms of sharing intellectual property.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the internship was performed remotely. It started off with us having several e-meetings with our supervisors where we discussed expectations, the scope of the internship work, etc. For us to get an understanding of Ericsson´s patent and licensing processes, we got to speak with multiple national and international IP professionals who were happy to explain their respective functions for handling IP. We were both humbled by the time and patience all the employees showed us. During our internship, we analyzed and categorized past green tech sharing initiatives such as GreenXchange, ECO Patent Commons, and WIPO Green. Courses in IP-Strategy and Patent & Innovation Engineering, provided by CIP, gave us the proper knowledge to make in-depth analyzes. Additionally, we held a workshop with participants from several different departments connected to Ericsson´s IP and licensing. The workshop aimed to vertically ventilate opinions and thoughts through the organization on how to spread green tech and generate value. Here, our learnings from the CIP-course Knowledge-based Business Development and Management gave us the proper tools to mediate between different interests. It became clear to us that even though IP strategies are complex to understand and formulate, we were well equipped with knowledge and frameworks from the CIP courses to build our reasoning. Together with the guidance from our supervisors at Ericsson, we were, in the end, able to deliver a much-appreciated recommendation for how to further spread green tech and generate value through mechanisms of sharing intellectual property.

To conclude, we would like to send our deepest gratitude towards our supervisors at Ericsson, Mathias Hellman, and Sanna Lundin. Furthermore, we highly recommend applying for the internships CIP is providing, particularly at Ericsson! The internship gave us invaluable practical knowledge and even though the requirements can seem frightening, you are well prepared through the CIP courses.
